The 29th Jukkasjärvi Icehotel was launched in mid-December 2018. This year, the hotel's suites are made of ice from a nearby water source. These include the Torne River, located on the border with Norway.
Each piece of the Jukkasjärvi Icehotel is designed by a different architect, which contributes to the originality of the entire building. Below, we tell you more about the history of this single establishment and on this year's edition!
The Jukkasjärvi Icehotel was opened for the first time in 1990
Located in Sweden, about 17 km from Kiruna, known as the northernmost municipality in the country, the Jukkasjärvi Icehotel is the first ice hotel in the world. The establishment was opened for the first time in 1990. This year marks its 29th edition.
The name of the ice hotel, Jukkasjärvi, is a word of the language of the Lapp people, a traditional inhabitant of the region. It is generally translated as "a meeting place near water". The word served as the name of the town where the hotel is located, because it housed a large market in the past. The hotel's creators have used the word Lappish for the name of the establishment because, like the town, it is a meeting place. According to them, it promotes the discovery of local inhabitants, visitors and creates links with nature, ice and creativity.
The building operates every year between the months of December and April. For its opening to the public at the end of the year, the Jukkasjärvi Icehotel is rebuilt again every year. The works concern the different rooms of the interior but also the furniture. Thus, the waters of the Torne River are also a material for making chairs and beds in the hotel.
On the occasion of the construction, we invite artists from all over the world to propose their creations in ice so that they are part of the whole establishment.
The story of the first ice hotel in the world
The Jukkasjärvi ice hotel is the first in the world. His unique story begins with an idea of Yngve Bergqvist, who is the founder of the establishment. This one was inspired by the tradition of ice carving from Japan. Thus, in 1989, he invited artists to present him projects of construction of an ice hotel. To decide which of these projects would be selected, he asked for help from Japanese ice sculptors.
Thanks to this original idea, the municipality of Jukkasjärvi began to attract visitors from all over the world. It has become a famous destination in Sweden, not only in summer but also during the coldest months of the year!
After the beginnings of this tradition in 1989, Yngve Bergqvist began to develop her idea little by little. The following years saw the appearance of an igloo, the ARTic Hall. Covering sixty square meters, it served as an art showroom. During the later editions of the hotel, the surface of the structure gradually increased. Some visitors also asked Mr. Bergqvist if they could spend the night in the building. Thus was born the concept of the hotel as we know it today.
The ice hotel is also the bearer of several awards. He is the Nordic Brand of the Year 2014 and he won the World Travel Awards in 2012, 2014 and 2015.
The Jukkasjärvi Icehotel is just as unique as it is important
The Jukkasjärvi Icehotel occupies an area of 6,000 square meters and has several rooms for visitors. In addition, it houses restaurants, a bar and an ice chapel. The latter is a popular destination for couples who dream of a wedding in an unusual setting.
Since opening in 1990, the facility operates at temperatures below -5 ° C. The maintenance of the temperature is essential for the existence of the hotel. The interior of the Jukkasjärvi Icehotel also serves as an exhibition space for ice sculptures, such as those of artist Jörgen Westin.
The construction of the hotel is carried out with snow and blocks of ice collected in the waters of Torne. This stage takes place every year in March. The necessary materials are about nine hundred tons of ice and over twenty five thousand tons of snow! These are kept near the building space.
On the construction side, snow is a material just as important as ice. The first is used primarily for the realization of a solid structure of the building. From where without doubt the important quantity of this material.
As for the ice cream, it is necessary for the creation of the bar, for the manufacture of decorative objects (including glasses for the bar) and for various events organized within the Jukkasjärvi Icehotel.
A hotel of ice with furniture and design like no other
Those who have not yet visited a similar structure at the Jukkasjärvi Icehotel might be surprised to learn that the ice is not only used for the construction of the structure but also for furnishing the space.
The chairs, the beds and all the other elements of the interior are carved in ice. To make the interior more comfortable for visitors, special equipment is offered to those who would like to spend one or more nights in a hotel room. This includes sleeping bags specifically designed for extreme conditions and reindeer furs. This equipment is necessary because the rooms do not have heating. As in the rest of the Jukkasjärvi Icehotel, in the rooms, the temperatures are kept below 5 ° C.
As for comfort, the hotel has a sauna located right next to the main building. However, the establishment does not have piping. For this reason, the rooms do not have bathrooms. Visitors to the hotel can use bathrooms in a building that is near the Ice Hotel.
Known as the world's largest ice hotel, the Jukkasjärvi Icehotel offers guests unique accommodations. Each of them is changed every year. The interiors of the rooms are not identical because they are made by different designers. For this purpose, artists from around the world propose various projects for the rooms. Then, a jury of about fifty artists decides which projects are selected for the rooms and for the other rooms of the hotel.
The chapel of Jukkasjärvi Icehotel
The chapel of the establishment is one of the most popular spaces within this one. It functions like any other classical church through close cooperation with the Church of Sweden. At the end of the construction process of the hotel, this chapel is dedicated, every year, during the mass held on Christmas day.
Belonging to one of the Seven Wonders of Sweden, the chapel is a very famous destination for future bride and groom who dream of a original setting for their wedding day .
Every year, she serves as a wedding ceremony setting for about one hundred and forty couples. Some also choose it as a baptismal celebration space. Statistics indicate that about twenty baptisms are held every year in this chapel of ice.
The 29th edition of the Jukkasjärvi Icehotel is currently being held
The 29th opening of the Jukkasjärvi Icehotel took place on 14th December 2018. It includes fifteen unique suites, an ice ceremonial room and a central reception area.
Like every year, the construction process began with the collection of materials. A jury also selected the artists and creators who would make the rooms and decorations of the hotel. This edition is marked in particular by the original designs of the columns and chandeliers of the establishment.
In addition to artists who propose personal projects, a special team oversees the construction of the building. It includes builders, ice makers, art services and designers who are responsible for lighting.
